Praise the LORD!
JESUS CHRIST the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Baptism by far is not just a New Testament teaching. Baptism goes back atleast 3500 years that I know of. When God gave Moses the pattern of the tabernacle, the pattern included water baptism represented by what was known as the Laver.
Exodus 30:18
New King James Version (NKJV)
“You shall also make a laver of bronze, with
its base also of bronze, for washing. You shall put it between the tabernacle of
meeting and the altar. And you shall put water in it,
This is where the priests in the old testament were to wash with water before entering into the holy place. It is clear that the priests were to only wash their hands and feet at the laver but deeper study of the word shows us why Jesus was fully submerged at His baptism when He was 30 years old. In the Old Testament a priest entered the priesthood at the age of 30. They were also fully submerged at this time to enter in.
Romans 6:4
New King James Version (NKJV)
Therefore we were buried with Him through
baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
It is common in many churches today and among many christians without a church to teach that you are saved by faith and nothing more is needed. One scripture commonly used would be from Romans Chapter 3.
Romans 3:28
New King James Version (NKJV)
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified
by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
When reading this verse from Romans Chapter 3 we must remember that the foundation of the churches was established in the Book of Acts. These churches already knew the foundation of baptism and were being instructed on what to do next. This can clearly be seen in Romans chapter 6 which is the scripture I gave just before this one from Romans Chapter 3.
It is clear that Jesus, AFTER He was crucified and resurrected, gave a commandment to baptize and it is also clear that the apostles commanded water baptism 10 years after Jesus' commandment.
Jesus' commandment AFTER the crucifixion Matthew 28:19
New King James Version (NKJV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
The apostles' commandment 10 years later Acts 10:48
New King James Version (NKJV)
And he commanded them to be baptized in the
name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
The tabernacle of Moses was a shadow of good things to come. We need to understand the set up of the priesthood in the natural at that time to understand the priesthood of the spiritual in this present time. Baptism is a New Testament commandment and not an option. Of course there must be a desire in each persons heart to want to know God. That is why Peter said on the Day of Pentecost;
Acts 2:38-39
New King James Version (NKJV)
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let
every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise
is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord
our God will call.”
It is only by the Blood of JESUS CHRIST that the New Testament Church can even be baptized into Jesus Christ! We should NOT be fighting against baptism but rather praising the LORD that we CAN be baptized!
The LORD bless you! Be sure to tell someone on the job about JESUS!
