Poor me, poor me,
I remember hearing a story about a pastor that was crossing a very tall bridge in New York City. As he was crossing it ,he noticed a well dressed man standing high up in the support system of the bridge. The pastor immediately pulled his car to the side and hollered to the well dressed man "Hey, what are you doing up there?" The man in the supports replied "I am sorry, but I have had all I can take in this world. I can't make my house payment, my kids don't love me anymore, my wife is ready to leave me and I have not been able to find a job for almost a whole year! I am ready to just end it all right now!" the pastor immediately began to pray over the situation and then wisely replied to the man in the supports "Look my friend, I am a pastor of a small church here in New York and if you would come down here and give me 15 minutes of your time, I believe you will change your mind" The well dressed man thought about it for a few moments and then looked at the pastor and replied "OK you got it, 15 minutes I can give you." The pastor grinned and replied "Thank you my friend, that's a deal." The well dressed man then proceeded to climb down and when he reached the pastor they shook hands, got into the pastors car and spent 15 minutes inside.
At the end of the 15 minutes, they BOTH got out and jumped!
Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness, considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
The above made up story is a good example of what can happen when trying to pull someone out of the pitts of hell. The example of the pastor above shows how the negativity of one person can overtake an unprepared life around them. If we spend too much time listening to the negativity around us we could find ourselves slowly sinking into a negative mindset also. A person should and MUST always have spiritual discernment when trying to help someone overtaken in a sin. This is NOT a selfish statement but a very biblical and wise statement as seen above in Galatians 6:1.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilent; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
See, sometimes someone may be being used of the devil and not even know it. Those that are sober should have discernment to know when the adversary is seeking another life to destroy and use wisdom how to handle the situation.
Having been around many drinkers in my life and done plenty of it myself before I found faith in Jesus Christ, I noticed there is a case of the poor me, poor me's that comes along with the attitude of drinking. It is a very demonic spiritual mindset that takes place and brings about a spirit of negativity that will convince a person that there is nothing better for them, than to slowly take the paths that lead to death.
Proverbs 1:33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
The Book of Proverbs in the bible is filled with spiritual wisdom to keep us off of the paths that lead to death! There are 31 chapters in the Book of Proverbs and that gives one chapter for each day of the month. If you have never read the Book of Proverbs in your bible, let me suggest that you start today by reading the chapter that coincides with the date of today. For example, I am writting this blog on July 31, 2012, so I would read the 31st chapter of Proverbs. Tomorrow will be August 1, 2012, and therefore, I will read the 1st chapter of proverbs tomorrow, and, on the 2nd of August I will read chapter 2 of Proverbs and so on.....
Of course you can read the bible anyway you choose, but, the above example is a good guide when you just pick it up and don't know where to begin. In fact, if alcohol is your problem, and you want to see what the bible actually says about alcohol in the Book of Proverbs, let me suggest to you, reading chapters 23 and 31.
Alcohol can be very deceitful, and some people can make it look safe and enjoyable for many years before that ol serpent turns on them.
Proverbs 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
I still remember when I got the revelation to just how crafty the works of the devil are! Most often, the enemy is so open that we just believe everything is going OK when we are sitting on the devil's lap! So often had I pulled up to liquor stores with huge signs on the front that said "spirits" and for many years it never hit me what kind of spirits they were! Another example of this would be those who love Las Vegas which is also known as "sin city" and many times those that visit get all caught up in exactly that! "sin city."
99% of the time, if not 100%, there are a dungeon of secrets that come with drinking alcohol. If you begin to wonder why you have asked God to help you and have even now tried reading the Book of Proverbs and for some reason find yourself still having a case of the poor me, poor me's, then it may be time to get extremely honest! It has been said that our secrets keep us sick and that is more than likely the problem now. These things need to be dealt with and it is time to quit running from them and time to face them and watch them be defeated in your life. BUT, go slow! Use wisdom! and wait on God to face these issues! Handling them in the wrong way can be more harmful than not handling them at all. Listen to the KING of kings and speak with Him first.
Proverbs 5:1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding.
