I remember hearing that beautiful Los Angeles was once an ugly desert but had been wonderfully beautified with palm trees and sod over the years. I remember seeing the palm trees coming in on big rigs durring the time I spent in the area and was amazed at how beautiful this barrren desert had become.
I saw another area near palm springs that was under heavy construction. From up on the mountain you could see the green areas that had been modified and beautified right next to barren desert that had not yet been touched and I realized just how true it was that all of this was an ugly desert but had been made to look like the perfect fantasy world.
As a Christian I can not help but wonder how many lives in America are designed in this same way. How many people look so good on the outside but inside they are nothing more than a barren desert? People from all over the world come to America to get the American dream, but, is the American dream as wonderful as they make it seem?
I did a blog a while back on why most Christians only last about 10 years in their walk with God. In that blog I discussed the parable of the sower and focused on the seed that fell amongst the thorns. In my few years as a Christian I have seen the american dream rob many of their strong walk with God.
Many people from other countries come here seeking God and a way to support their families. As they begin to prosper they think "this MUST be God" and begin to send money home to their loved ones. As the years go by, a nice house and a couple of cars later the American dream becomes the American scream! No longer able to visit their loved ones once a year due to financial stress and only able to send a few crumbs of support to them they have been caught in a net like a flopping fish.
I have visited a few other countries and I will admit that America has been blessed by God and I am not trying to put in down BUT if the people walk away from the God that blessed her, she will become as every other country that has been blessed by God and walked away from Him.
If the people of the country continue to COVET everything they see people have on TV or in the driveway next door, the blessing will slowly become a curse. Paul taught to be content with little or much. There is nothing wrong with having very little and there is nothing wrong with have more than enough but we need to always wait on God for the more than enough.
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
It's sad to know that the history of the bible shows that before the fall of each great nation that God lifted up, there was a pattern to the fall of each nation. Each nation that God has blessed throughout history prospered BUT after their prosperity the people became greedy and after the greed came the fall.
If we are going to covet anything, let it be the gifts of God and the hearts of the lives that live next door! and the hearts of the lives that live far away for that matter! Afterall, obtaining the American dream WITHOUT God won't get you very far anyway!
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and loose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Although there may be more talk about God in this country than ever before, it has now proven itself meaningless without knowing who God is! If your God does not have a Name, maybe it's time to give Him one and learn more about Him and His ways!
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Phillip? he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father?
It's not enough to say "In God we trust", we also have to know that His Name is JESUS! Call on His Name and watch great things happen!
2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
