While some may think this to be a light thing, be sure it is probably the most important revelation in your life!
Thoughout the bible, God, has revealed Himself at different times by many different names. From the earliest of readings we find God known as "Elohim". This name is used more than 30 times in Genesis Chapter 1 alone! Every time the English word God is used in the bible it refers to ELOHIM- our creator. The bible tells us clearly that Jesus is ELOHIM in the book of Colossians when it tells us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God and has created ALL things!
Colossians 1:15-16 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: ALL things were created by Him, and for Him.
Another well known name of God from the Old Testament is "JEHOVAH". This name literally means "One who is what He is". Used 6,823 times in scripture it is the most descriptive name of God in the Old Testament. This is the name that God used when giving new truth in the Old Testament. It was NOT, thus saith God (ELOHIM) it was thus saith the LORD (JEHOVAH). Remember that ELOHIM revealed Himself to Moses as "I am that I am" in Exodus 3:14.
Before God made Himself known to Moses as "JEHOVAH", He had revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as "The One that maketh fruitful" which is "El-Shaddai", God Almighty!
Genesis 28:3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people.
Shaddai is translated 48 times in the bible as Almighty and 24 times as breast, making Himself the strength giver and satisfier of His people. It was "El Shaddai" that gave Abraham and Sarah their child when they were very old in age!
As "Adonai" we know we are His slaves. It is by this Name that God reveals Himself as our Master. By this Name we see that God demands obedience from His creation.
Malachi 1:6 A son honoreth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a Father, where is mine honor? and if I be a master, where is My fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise My Name. And ye say, wherein have we despised thy Name?
He is our "Adonai" our Master and LORD.
The Lord will forsee and provide, yes, He is "JEHOVAH-JIREH".
Genesis 22:8,14 "And Abraham said, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."
As "JEHOVAH-ROPHE," He is the LORD that heals!
Exodus 15:26 "And said, If thou witl diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and will do that which is right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee".
As "JEHOVAH-NISSI", He is our Banner of victory. When Amalek had come to do battle with God's people, Moses stood on a hill while Joshua led the troops below. Moses had in his hand the rod of God. When Moses had the rod in the air, Israel would win the battle and when he was weak and the rod came down, they would loose the battle. Aaron and Hur sat Moses on a rock and helped him to keep the rod lifted high so that Israel would be victorious and Moses named this place "JEHOVAH-NISSI", which means, The Lord our Banner.
Exodus 17:11,15 "And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it "JEHOVAH-NISSI".
As "JEHOVAH-M'KADDESH", He is the LORD that sanctifies. By this name we see JEHOVAH best described in His character of holiness. It is JEHOVAH-M'KADDESH that demands His people to seperate themselves from the unsaved!
2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye seperate, saith the LORD, and touch not the unclean thing: and I will receive you.
There are atleast 22 more Names I could continue with but I think you get the drift my now! Before I get to the NAME that is above all names, let me give you "JEHOVAH-SHALOM" which means "The LORD is Peace". I want to give this name just in case your hair is standing up from the previous readings!
Israel had been under severe oppression for seven years by the Midianites. These Midianites had stolen everything that Israel had! They stole their food, tools, livestock and there was no peace! In the midst of all of this God calls Gideon to lead Israel into victory. God replaced Gideon's fear with perfect peace and used Gideon to lead Israel into that victory. Gideon built an altar and called it JEHOVAH-SHALOM"
Judges 6:23-24 "And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it "JEHOVAH-SHALOM".
I remember when my life was in a very confusing place as I was completely entangled in the world. I had a million things going in my mind at one time and was trying to take care of them all at once. It was suggested that I become a member of what was called the K.I.S.S. program. At the time, I had no idea what was being mentioned but then it was explained to me. Keep It Simple Stupid! Maybe that was what I needed to hear at the time but I prefer to say now, Keep It Simple Saints!
As I mentioned above there are atleast 22 more names I could put here, but, let's keep it simple! Colossians chapter one told us that JESUS is the image of the invisible God.
All of the names you read above were made known to the Jews only. As powerful as all of these Names of God are, the bible tells us that there is one NAME that is above ALL names.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we MUST be saved.
It was just 50 days after Jesus' resurrection and after He had shed His blood that God began to make His Name known to all humanity and not the Jews only. It was on the Day of Pentecost that God made His power known to all and His Name known like never before. Although the Day of Pentecost was a baptism of the Jews in Jesus Name, it was next taken to the Samaritans, (Acts:8:16) and then to the gentiles, which are all other races on earth other than Jews and Samaritans. (Acts 19:5). If you don't know JESUS, you CAN'T know JEHOVAH! because JESUS is the image of the God you have never seen!
John 14:8-10 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto Him, have I been so long with you, and yet thou hast not known me, Philip? he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works.
